Archives For work

Are you waiting for the whole path to illuminate before you take the next step? Before I started chasing my dream I was doing just that. Life doesn’t work that way. Still I figured if I read enough books and listened to enough teaching I would then have all the information so I could chase my dream, whatever that was. I was waiting for this straight, perfect path to be sitting there with no bumps and no turns like a runway. Good to go and clear for takeoff. Fly to your destination. There are good reasons for life not being this way. Frankly, I don’t know if I would have taken off on this flight if I would have known how turbulent and scary this would be. Your dream will be the same way. You won’t have the answers till you need the solution to a problem. I have changed my perspective and now I am happy I did not know very much about my path. I am excited; let’s look at why. These 3 things make it a blessing that you don’t know all the answers.

1. Trust God. Chasing your dream will allow you the opportunity to trust God more and more. Nothing forces us to rely on our King than not having the answers. If you knew everything there would be no need for faith and hope. With each step we can hold on to this verse. Jeremiah 29: 11-13, “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.’” What a great thing that you don’t know it all, but that you worship the one that created you who does knows your path. Call on Him today.

“You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

2. Fear. I am getting better at facing fear and telling it to bug someone else. Are you? Even with building this muscle I would be frozen in fear if I had the whole picture now. With the growth that happens in your life you will face bigger and bigger challenges. You are not ready to face the giants in your life ten years from now. You are ready to face the giants in your life today. Face your fear that has illuminated.

“Fear would have told the Wright brothers not to fly. Fear would have told Rosa Parks to change seats. Fear would have told Steve Jobs that people hate touchscreens.” ~ Jon Acuff

3. Growth. If I would have had the answers I had today, this blog would have grown faster. I am so thankful it didn’t. I have and will become a better and better writer. If you had your whole dream now it would fail. You and I have growth to do that only comes with practice. Practice and practice some more. You will be amazed at the growth that can happen over time.

“Don’t focus on the growth of the church; focus on the health of the church, as healthy things grow!” ~Brian Huston

So today be thankful you don’t have all the answers. You have what you need for today. In some way put footsteps toward your dream today. Do not wait till tomorrow. Be blessed on your journey.

Money is not a complicated thing, however, our actions with money can be very complicated. Many times we over complicate it and add drama. The truth is if we did three simple things we would have enough money and would not let dollars and cents be a stronghold in our lives. This post is not about investing and borrowing. To find out more on those decisions click hereThese 3 things should be lived out daily with finances.

1. Give 10%. We must be giving. We should not be closed fisted, but instead have an open hand. This is impossible to do unless you are giving part of your money away. Giving frees up the heart, kills envy, and renews the mind to remember that life is so much more than money. Like anything in life this is a muscle that needs to be built. If you have not been giving it will be a stretch for you, but it’s worth the effort to lower your lifestyle to have money to give.

2. Invest 15%. Are you planning for your future? How are you going to eat when you can’t work any longer? How are you going to pay for unexpected bills? I know these are not things that are fun to think about so we usually don’t until it’s too late. We need to be putting away at least 15% of our income and build savings and retirement. If a couple hundred-dollar bills ruins your life there is a problem. There is a level of peace when there is more than a few dollars in the bank. You will make different decisions and get better sleep.

3. Live within your means 75%. It is your choice whether this includes debt payments or not. My wife and I have decided to stop borrowing money on anything other than our home. It may take us longer to become wealthy because of a lack of leverage, but I believe the freedom and peace is worth the sacrifice. If this is not the choice you make that’s okay, but at least make sure that you don’t pass the point of bills being more than income. That is not a fun place to be.

I know that these three things are not earth shattering, but most things in life that are simple are where the real change happens. If you have gotten yourself upside down with bills it will take a lot of effort to dig out of them, but in the end it will be worth it. Give, save, and live within the rest. This is the key to a life of freedom and peace with finances.

Half awake driving into work mind numb going through the same motions as the day before. Is this not how most of us live? There is no passion rather a begrudging attitude about having to work to pay the bills. The excitement of the new job is gone and everything seems gray. Living for the weekend and evenings, the day is going to creep by. How do we get that passion back like when we first had the job? These 2 things will bring passion back into your work so you don’t feel like you’re on a train track doing the same thing day after day.

1. Recognize the alternative. No job. That’s the alternative; all the weekends you want. Problem is no money, may go hungry, can’t pay the mortgage or keep the lights on. Scared, but lots of free time. Talk about stress! Anything I face at work is better than the lack of work and if it’s that bad, it’s time to find a new job.

“Great minds have purposes, others have wishes.”  ~Washington Irving

2. What are you here for? What did God put you on earth for? For me it is to restore people by giving them significance in their journey. So I view the world through this lens. If I focus on those parts of my job as a Figaro’s Pizza franchise, I love it. How can I play a role in restoration or significance there you may ask? Letting my employees know they are valued. Giving customers food with service. Hearing about their day. Sometimes praying with them. If I focus on what brings me joy and passion I have no more Mondays. If I focus on rolling dough, doing books, and making pizza my job gets stale.

“I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes.” ~Charles Swindoll

These are just two quick things that bring passion and drive back to my day. In the end if this doesn’t help, as an employer I would say please find a new job. This is meant as a coconut on the head as we all need that sometimes. Would you pay yourself the wage you are making for the job you are doing? Sometimes my answer is no. If your answer is no all the time you are not going to feel fulfilled, but rather feel like a leach. No one likes to creep by in life. Stand tall, take charge of your attitude and nothing can hold you back. Choose to have passion!
