Things Unseen

I focus on the wrong things sometimes and I think you may also. As humans it is easy to focus on what we see. The thing is that what we see is just a result of things unseen. Things unseen are just as real as the things we see. We understand electricity and gravity yet why is it so hard to understand the spiritual realm? The spiritual realm is just as real as anything that you and I can touch and see. This point of view is so crucial for our Christian walk as well as our dream chasing.

For today’s illustration I am going to talk about a tree. We need to focus on the roots (spiritual) not the fruit (physical). Fruit is a byproduct of a healthy tree. The fruit that we currently have in our lives is the result of the healthiness of our root system. It is a waste of time to try to change the current fruit. We need to focus on health and better fruit will come. Both good and bad are a result of planting and taking care of the tree. In Romans 8:5 it says, “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.” We need to be renewed and refreshed by the Spirit. Cultivating our roots that should be planted in Christ.

What is below ground is what makes what we see above ground. Roots make the fruit, not the other way around. Ephesians 6:12 states, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” One of the biggest lies the enemy uses against us is to distract us. He wants to move us off of what really matters, the eternal. He gets us to focus on the fruit instead of putting our time and energy focusing on our roots. I need to spend much more time in this battle. Do you?

Make sure that you are focusing on the right questions. We need to be focused on fixing the problem not the symptom. The battle is in the unseen. We need to wage war there. Thoughts will eventually lead to action. In Proverbs 23:7 it states, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…”  Today’s choices, thoughts, and finally actions will make tomorrow’s fruit. So today let your spiritual eyes come alive. Be blessed on the journey.

  • Letting tomorrow’s fruit inform our actions and thoughts today is such a powerful discipline to master. I find myself being really good with it in some areas of my life (and seeing the benefits of it) but finding it more challenging in others. I guess it’s a learning process but one we must remain mindful of.
